Research project

Humanitarian communication - Journalism - Ethics

This research examines the relationship between humanitarian actors in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Congolese journalists (local media) working in the city. Do humanitarian organizations support local journalism, or are they more inclined to develop “humanitarian communication”, using journalists as mouthpieces? These issues call into question the principles of “humanitarian ethics” and “journalistic ethics”.

The analysis of sixteen semi-structured interviews conducted with humanitarian aid workers and media players provides food for thought about the way they interact. The research details the context of their exchanges, the objectives they pursue, the means they deploy to achieve them, and how they evaluate their collaboration. It also underlines the importance of taking into account the perceptions each has of the other, in order to ensure the effectiveness of the action taken by humanitarian organizations.
