Research project

On the front line: recognition and professionalization strategies for humanitarian frontline workers

This research starts from the observation of the difficulties faced by frontline workers in their journey, difficulties that have an impact on the location of help. Verena Richardier, PhD student in Sociology (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, 2019), works in partnership with Mamane Sani, PhD student in Anthropology (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon) and associate researcher at LASDEL. Here, they focus on the “little hands” of the humanitarian front, the obstacles they face in gaining professional recognition, and the professionalization strategies they employ to achieve this. The research focuses in particular on training schemes such as the one run by Bioforce’s Africa Center in Dakar.
