for his research in the history of humanitarianism, government, and humanitarian knowledge, and his advocacy for the use of social sciences by practitioners of international solidarity.

Joël Glasman is a historian and professor at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. His work focuses on the contemporary history of West Africa, colonial history and humanitarian aid. His latest book, Petit manuel d’autodéfense. Les humanités humanitaires’ was published by Belles Lettres in 2023. It shows how humanitarian organisations can draw on anthropology, sociology and history to better understand the issues at stake in their operations and better defend their institutions. His previous book, Minimal Humanities. Humanitarianism and the Quantification of Human Needs, published by Routledge in 2020, shows that the notion of ‘humanitarian need’ has undergone an astonishing transformation over the last one hundred and fifty years. The Foundation wished to honor him for his research in the history of humanitarianism, government, and humanitarian knowledge, as well as his advocacy for the use of social sciences by practitioners of international solidarity.

The Research Prizes of the French Red Cross Foundation, awarded with the support of the Red Cross of Andorra, aim to highlight scientific work already completed or innovative lines of thought devoted to humanitarian and social issues, both in the North and in the South. Open to all disciplines in the human and social sciences and to all nationalities, they reward scientific excellence and human commitment, and promote scientific knowledge, ethical reflection and social innovation to encourage action in favour of the most vulnerable.
