On 8 June 2023, the 8th edition of l’Instant Recherche took place: “From humanitarian emergencies to resilience”, the Foundation’s scientific webinar dedicated to sharing research work in the human and social sciences. This webinar provided humanitarian aid professionals and researchers with an insight into the concept of resilience, its systemic approach and how it is evolving in the light of the complexity of crises and the still excessively segmented nature of humanitarian operations.

This webinar brought together 4 researchers:

  • Ayoko Akouavi DOGBE FOLI, Doctor in Development Psychology, Teacher and Deputy Director of License 2 and 3 in psychology at the Institut Catholique de Toulouse and laureate of the Foundation’s research fellowship.
  • Cheikh FAYE, PhD in Geography, Teacher-Researcher, Lecturer in the Geography Department of the Assane Seck University in Ziguinchor (Senegal) and laureate of a Foundation’s research fellowship.
  • Benoît LALLAU, Socio-Economist and Senior Lecturer at Sciences Po Lille
  • Stéphanie MALTAIS, PhD in International Development, University of Ottawa, post-doctoral researcher and part-time professor at the School of International Development and Globalisation at the University of Ottawa, laureate of a Foundation’s research fellowship

This webinar provided humanitarian aid professionals and researchers with an insight into the concept of resilience, its systemic approach and how it is evolving in the light of the complexity of crises and the still excessively segmented nature of humanitarian operations.

Their work provides an opportunity to examine the notion of the resilience of both populations and organisations in the face of shocks such as natural disasters, migration trajectories and the management of health crises such as COVID.

The meeting also highlighted the complexity of measuring resilience at individual, community or organisational level, given the temporal and potentially ambiguous nature of the concept. This criticism should help to inform action and refine a new paradigm for humanitarian aid. The aim is to help people in a holistic way over time, before, during and after a disaster, in order to reduce human suffering.
